Youth Driven Policy Agenda

Our youth spent more than a year creating the Agenda. They surveyed 913 of their peers (almost 10% of all high-school aged youth in Providence) to find out what they wanted to see in their schoos and communities. Education reform was an overwhelming concern. Our youth analyzed the data and created a document with 25 Action Steps for systemic reform of schools, the Police Dept, and jobs/after-school opportunities. We then go input into the document from 10 other youth organizations and more than 8 major stakeholders (including the Mayor’s Chief of Policy, the Police Chief, President of the Teacher’s Union, and the Superintendent’s Cabinet). All of this work resulted in a huge press conference announcing the Agenda, attended by more than 200 of Providence’s major policy-makers, including Mayor Cicilline, Commissioner McWalters, Superintendent Evans, and many State Legislators and City Councilors.
